Interview: Evilheart (Mexico)

This is the interview with Rodolfo Rogers, drummer of the crazy Deathmetallers Evilheart, enjoy!

1.- Can you introduce Evilheart to us speaking a little bit about its history?
-Evilheart was formed in Culiacan, Sinaloa in 1999, we have a demo "Summoned To War" (2001) and 2 albums "Dark In Glory" (2004) y "Storm Of Annihilation" (2007) We start playing a melodic black metal en STW, then we adopt an hybrid sound (black death) in DIG and SOA its pure death metal. We have played with Dimmu Borgir, Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Amon Amarth, Behemoth, Hacavitz, Disgorge, among others…...

2.- How hard was to consolidate as a band coming from Sinaloa, do you find too many obstacles at the time you search for playing or recording?
-To get shows it´s really a bitch, we are at 20 hours distance from Mexico City, Monterrey and Tijuana, so you can inagine how hard it is for us! Plenty of times they prefer to hire cheap and horrible bands, in recording matters we have learned from the mistakes we have done, that is why the sound of each album has gone just better and better.

3.- You record your own albums?
-Yes man! We auto produce our recordings and we will be like that until a good record deal appears.

4.- Have you had any approach to any label?
-An european label offered a chance but we dont agree with the terms, mexican labels have offered distribution, but not production and in general terms they do not invest money in productions as we invested in SOA.

5.- Musically speaking i think in SOA the sound is very strong and rough, do you think death metal is what fitted more to the band?
Yes definitely, and the next album will be in the same vain…fast and aggressive.

6.- Who are your main influences musically, i know each of you have different references but any band that you have in commun? I must say that you make me remember Pestilence in the Testimony of the Ancients.
-Personally Morbid Angel is my main influence, and as a band we got Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Vader, Dissection, Malevolent Creation, etc…

7.- What is your opinion about Pete Sandoval?
-It is my main influence as a drummer, i,ve seen him live and his execution is spectacular, i also await the new Morbid Angel album, i hope it will be better than Heretic, in terms of production and composing matters.

8.- Now that you have told me of your influences, how was playing with Malevolent Creation, Deicide and Behemoth, being a fundamental part of Metal?
-For me, was an incredible experience along when Phil Fasciana of Malevolent Creation get up the stage with his Evilheart t-shirt that we gave him, and i mean, we do not ask him to wear it and see him with the t shirt was even better.
Also was a great honor to play with Behemoth and Deicide and we hope in a near future we´ll share the stage with them again!

9.- How is the process of composition in Evilheart?
-Adrian the guitar player, makes the riffs in his house i make drum rythms in mine, then in the rehearsal we incorporate the guitar and drums, and we all have the task to work it hard until it is complete; finally between Jorge (vocals) and me we make the lyrics and that is how lyrics fit perfectly in the song.

10.- Speaking about lyrics can you tell us a bit about "Oath of Apostasy"?
-"Oath of Apostasy" is about this individual that quit his faith for considering all being a product of a manipulation, is an anti religious track merely speaking, i think no one needs to believe in ficticious matters as religion to conquer his goals or ideals.

11.- What can we expect from Evilheart in this year?
-As i said before there is too much struggle playing in shows, we expect that some shows will be confirmed and also work in the next album to be recorded in 2010 it will be a conceptual album, also we are considering working with Mana Studios for the production and with Niklas Sundin in the art department.

12.- How was contacting Mana Studios and how is the relationship with them?
-We contact them via e mail we tell them about SOA and that we wish to have a serious and first level production, and they agree to work with us.
Brian Elliot was the audio engineer and who made the master, he was very accesible at all time, we are still in contact and we definitelly work with him in the next album. Ia m sure that will be brutal!
Well dedicate all 2009 in pre production and composition.

13.- Hows the scene at Sinaloa?
-Well, a lot of bands had emerge, but very few take it seriously, they do not worry to have a recording quality, many of them desintegrate without having a demo and so, and is very sad cause there is talent but not recording.

14.- Speaking about this, what would make the mexican scene stronger and important like the Brazilian scene?
-Personally, if bands worry to have more recording quality that would help to have a stronger and competitive scene, so people put more attention to the national scene and there will be more support.

15. Would you like to tell something to the promotors in DF, Monterrey so we can have you here?
-We have been to Monterrey in several ocasions, last one in May 2008 with Behemoth, unfortunately we never had gone to D.F. cause we are very far away but hopefully in this year we are going there…we are desperate to rock in there!

16.- Anything you wanna add?
-Thank you very much for this interview and we invite all people and organizers to listen some tracks in SOA at www.myspace.com/evilheartofficial and we hope there will be plenty of shows in this 2009 and meanwhile we will be composing our next album and we hope too making a good deal to edit it, stay metal!!!!!
